Books, coffee, chat, community
Last night was our first Coffehouse Book Club at our local Starbucks. You can never be sure who’ll come along, if they like the book, will people talk to each other?! All my questions were answered when 25 people came to sample coffee and talk about the book ‘The Island’ by Victoria Hislop.
I had lots of fun in our group. There was a mix of people from people I used to work with, people Sam used to work with and people I’d never seen before. There were people who came because they’d seen the poster, people coming because they’d just started jobs in Sheffield and didn’t know anyone yet, people others had invited, a cross-section of ages and gender.
I loved having something to talk about to new people over coffee. The feedback so far has been really positive. One girl left and said “Thank you! This is brilliant!! I’ll be back!”. Others felt that a month was too long before seeing people again. We’ll be trying to get people connected to one another in between times but because they want to, not because we want them to!
I can’t wait til the next one! I feel like this is something this city needs and have already seen the beginnings of what I know will become a beautiful community…

[…] Rachel and Sam are two new friends from the U.K.  that I met in LA last spring. They have started a book club that meets in a coffee house in Sheffield.  This sounds like an awesome way to start creating community. […]
