England v Ecuador and patriotic biscuits!
We’re waiting for kick-off… they’re justy giving us some interesting facts about Ecuador. They make panama hats and Christina Aguilera’s dad is from Ecuador! Interesting.. I’m not a great one for football knowledge but I know if we lose and get knocked out, the nation will be in mourning and many will cry. That won’t happen though! Sam told me to stop with my negative talk! I just think if I don’t expect too much, I can be pleasantly surprised!
Here’s Sam with his shirt and our patriotic biscuits (cookies!?)…
Come on England!!!!!!!!!!

We’re 9 minutes in. Nothing especially special happening yet. Probably cos I don’t know much about football! I’m liking the supporters’ songs though. I hope England can stand the heat… Ecuadorians are probably used to it.

Oooh, I don’t know a lot but I know that Ecuador nearly scored! Sam’s shaking his head..

Watching too, and hoping England survives the heat and wins.
I have a theory - the teams that stand together with arms over each other’s shoulders singing their national anthem, as opposed to those who stand alone with their hand over their heart, perform better.
We’ll see if England wins. Then I’ll have more support for my theory.
The biscuits look yummy!

Thanks for your support Beth! I like your theory! We’ll see……. We have way too many biscuits - if you were here you could have one!

Give your leftover biscuits to the homeless!
I’m watching too…pretty noneventful game really isn’t it? Come on England!!!
June 25th, 2006 at 4:15 pm
Excellent idea Deana! I’m hoping something exciting happens soon. I read some newspaper when it slowed down! I’m watching now though!
June 25th, 2006 at 4:16 pm
Woohoo!!! GOOOOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 25th, 2006 at 4:17 pm
That calls for a celebratory England biscuit!
June 25th, 2006 at 4:17 pm
Yippeeee…that was a close one!
June 25th, 2006 at 4:19 pm

Bend it like Beckham!
June 25th, 2006 at 4:35 pm
Bend it Like Beckham is one of Abbey’s favorite movies…I was trying to explain to her the other day that the guy on the tv was indeed Beckham but she didn’t believe me. Oh well…
June 25th, 2006 at 4:51 pm
There you go…you’re still in the running! Now I can get on with the day! Enjoy your Victory biscuits!
June 25th, 2006 at 4:53 pm
Hooray!! Phew. Hope you have a lovely day!
June 25th, 2006 at 5:07 pm
You’ve got to give it to us, we’re in the quarter-finals of the World Cup and still haven’t played anywhere near our best. Are we just not as good as we think we are, or saving it for when matters? Let’s hope it’s the latter. C’mon England!
June 25th, 2006 at 5:37 pm
Now we’re watching the Queen’s birthday celebrations live from Buckingham Palace. It’s a big party for kids in the palace garden with a show featuring famous people playing the greatest British childrens book characters. From one patriotic activity to another!

congratulations!

Congratulations! Hope you found a good home for the rest of your patriotic cookies.
Beth’s theory of the national anthem is an interesting one. Here in Cincinnati, at baseball games, we stand with our hands over our hearts for the anthem, but we put our arms round each others’ shoulders and sway for the 7th-inning stretch while singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Shows where our priorities are, eh? Lol. Can’t wait for the England-Portugal game. Hopefully they’ll get a better ref than Portugal had in their last match.
June 26th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
I actually don’t think the ref was that bad. Sure, he got some decisions wrong, but I thought both Holland and Portugal were a disgrace. The number of dirty tackles was out of order. They were deliberately seeking to not just foul each other, but hurt each other. They both let down the World Cup in my book with such dirty play. The ref is taking the blame when it’s the players who should take the blame.
June 26th, 2006 at 2:22 pm
Maybe, but if the ref had come down hard and fast in the first fifteen minutes of the match, he would have had a far better chance of keeping order the rest of the match. You could see it escalating, you could feel the emotions beginning to run higher and higher right through the TV set. It was shocking– the match, the players, everything.
Really though it’s the same thing as with a baby sitting job, a youth group, or a camp full of students (and soccer stars really do act like children much of the time don’t they?). Firm, fair, and strict when you have to be. That’s the only way to play it. Only when everyone is behaving properly can anyone enjoy themselves. And sports are supposed to be fun, aren’t they?
They ought to have Dame Maggie Smith out there reffing. Lol!

….is your beloved country in mourning now….so sorry….dale can truly empathize…..so sad…
July 3rd, 2006 at 6:05 pm
The nation is absoloutely in mourning! So sad. The atmosphere in the pub where we watched the game was heart-breaking. Everyone’s eyes looked so sorrowful and all were silent. It’s sad seeing the England flags hanging out of everyone’s windows…..
