The nation is absoloutely in mourning! So sad. The atmosphere in the pub where we watched the game was heart-breaking. Everyone's eyes looked so sorrowful and all were silent. It's sad seeing the England flags hanging out of everyone's windows.....

Maybe, but if the ref had come down hard and fast in the first fifteen minutes of the match, he would have had a far better chance of keeping order the rest of the match. You could see it escalating, you could feel the emotions beginning to run higher and higher right through the TV set. It was shocking-- the match, the players, everything.

Really though it's the same thing as with a baby sitting job, a youth group, or a camp full of students (and soccer stars really do act like children much of the time don't they?). Firm, fair, and strict when you have to be. That's the only way to play it. Only when everyone is behaving properly can anyone enjoy themselves. And sports are supposed to be fun, aren't they?

They ought to have Dame Maggie Smith out there reffing. Lol!

I actually don't think the ref was that bad. Sure, he got some decisions wrong, but I thought both Holland and Portugal were a disgrace. The number of dirty tackles was out of order. They were deliberately seeking to not just foul each other, but hurt each other. They both let down the World Cup in my book with such dirty play. The ref is taking the blame when it's the players who should take the blame.

Congratulations! Hope you found a good home for the rest of your patriotic cookies.

Beth's theory of the national anthem is an interesting one. Here in Cincinnati, at baseball games, we stand with our hands over our hearts for the anthem, but we put our arms round each others' shoulders and sway for the 7th-inning stretch while singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Shows where our priorities are, eh? Lol. Can't wait for the England-Portugal game. Hopefully they'll get a better ref than Portugal had in their last match.

Now we're watching the Queen's birthday celebrations live from Buckingham Palace. It's a big party for kids in the palace garden with a show featuring famous people playing the greatest British childrens book characters. From one patriotic activity to another!

You've got to give it to us, we're in the quarter-finals of the World Cup and still haven't played anywhere near our best. Are we just not as good as we think we are, or saving it for when matters? Let's hope it's the latter. C'mon England!
