Racing for Life

We did it! My friends Sarah and Sarah and I just did a 5km run to raise money for cancer research. We’ve raised about £180 and nationwide, women from all over the UK raise £55 million. 10,000 women ran in Sheffield. Incredible. Once of the Sarah’s mum Kay has been through reconstructive surgery as a result of breast cancer which really touched a lot of people. She has done so well making it through. I felt we celebrated that.

Each person had written on their back who they were running for. The thousands of names moved me to tears. I stood in front of a young girl of about 12 during a 1 minute silence before the race began. There was a photo of a boy of about 14 on her back with the words “In memory of my brother”. Another lady had a picture of her Dad on her back with the date he died. Underneath was written “You always taught me that in the races in life I should use my strength and keep going to the end. I’ll make you proud”.

So many people whose lives have been affected by cancer who feel like they can make a difference. There was such an beautiful atmosphere that made me push myself further than before. There were people running who had cancer, people who had survived. Inspirational. The phrase for the day was “Together we will beat it”.

I didn’t expect to feel such a sense of achievement. I feel proud to have run with thousands of women who spurred one another on and made such a massive difference, bringing hope…
